The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors an annual American History Essay Contest for students in grades 5 - 8.

This year the students were given the topic of “ Stars and Stripes Forever”.
They were asked to imagine they were a newspaper reporter for The Philadelphia Times on May 14, 1897. The newspaper editor asked them to attend and report on the first public performance of John Philip Sousa’s new march, “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”

Rita Carroll’s essay won first place in the local chapter competition for fifth grade.

Rhealyn Youngblood’s essay won first place in the local chapter competition for sixth grade.

Both of these girls were invited to read their essays to the General Sumter Chapter of the DAR. Their essays were then submitted to the state-level competition.

Rbealyn ‘s essay won 1st  place in the state for 6th grade.
