Briarwood Christian School Senior Austen Ralph Named National Merit Semifinalist

Briarwood senior recognized among less than 1% of U.S. graduating seniors
Briarwood Christian School is proud to announce that senior Austen Ralph has been named a Semifinalist in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program, one of the nation’s most recognized academic honors for high school students.
Approximately 1.5 million students qualified for the National Merit Scholarship Program in fall 2025, with approximately 16,000 high-performing students named Semifinalists based on results of the PSAT taken in October 2025. These students represent less than 1% of graduating seniors in the United States and have the opportunity to continue in the competition for more than 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $30 million. Finalists will be announced in February 2027.
Austen has distinguished himself at Briarwood through academic achievement, leadership and involvement across a wide range of programs. He has earned a 4.43 GPA while pursuing an all-AP and honors course load.
A five-year member of the Briarwood Christian School Marching Band, Austen serves as tuba section leader and has also held leadership positions as Vice President of Administration and Vice President of Logistics. He was selected to participate in both the Auburn University Honor Band and Samford University Honor Band in 2026. He also plays saxophone in the jazz band and clarinet in the wind ensemble.
Beyond the Fine Arts, Austen serves as President of the Physics Club and as a Briarwood Ambassador. He has been inducted into the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and the Spanish Honor Society. His previous student leadership experience also includes serving as Vice President and Treasurer of Model UN.
“Austen is a wonderful example of a student who has taken the gifts God has given him and worked diligently to develop them,” said Mr. Gus Martin, Superintendent of Briarwood Christian School. “Certainly, we are proud of this tremendous academic achievement, but we are equally proud of the young man Austen is becoming. He has invested himself in the life of our school through music, leadership and service, and he has done so with humility and a desire to serve others. We are grateful for Austen and excited to see how the Lord continues to use his gifts.”
Austen is also an active member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church, where he serves on the Student Leadership Team. He has served the church community as both a day camp and overnight camp counselor.
Austen’s National Merit recognition reflects both his academic accomplishments and the way he has developed and used his God-given abilities throughout his time at Briarwood. His commitment to academics, Fine Arts, leadership and service reflects Briarwood Christian School’s mission to provide a Christ-centered, transformational education that equips and inspires students to glorify God by maximizing their God-given abilities.
Austen is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Carter Ralph and has three brothers and one sister.
