Information Regarding Briarwood Bass Club and Team 2019/2020
There is a Briarwood Bass CLUB and a Briarwood Bass TEAM
the following information explains both.
Briarwood Bass CLUB
BCS Bass Club is open to ANY BCS student from grades 7-12 who may have an interest in competitive fishing. Club dues are $135.00 and provides a club bass jersey and opportunities to attend club meetings, get information about individual bass tournaments, and provides permission to fish Lake Lion (the lake next to BCS). It also allows students to take advantage of some of our discount buying programs through our sponsors.
Sign-ups for the BCS Bass Club will open early August each year and close at the first club meeting . We typically meet on Thursdays at 8:05 AM in the varsity team room (downstairs in the athletic wing of the Upper School). All club dues must be paid by Aug. 31.
Do I have to have a boat to be in the club?
No, many of our club members do not have a boat.
Are there opportunities to fish tournaments even if I am not on the varsity travel team?
YES- there are numerous individual tournaments throughout the year to fish outside of the varsity travel team schedule- see below.
Are there other things suggested to help us become tournament anglers?
Get an Alabama Vessel License:
You must be at least 12 years of age to operate a motorized vessel on Alabama's waterways. You also must be licensed. A written examination is required for applicants, except those who were 40 or older on April 28, 1994, or those who have successfully completed boating courses given by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the U.S. Power Squadron or the Alabama Marine Police "Boating Basics" course. The vessel class "V" must be added to your license if you intend to operate a motorized vessel. This legislation, which also provides sanctions for drunken driving and other offenses, has been hailed as the toughest boating safety act in the country.
Applicants may apply and be tested as necessary at Department of Public Safety Driver License Offices across the state.
* Under age 14, Vessel Learner License only. Must be accompanied by a Vessel Licensed driver that is 21 years old or older.
Get an Alabama Fishing License:
Required for residents 16 years of age and under 65 years of age who fish with rod and reel, hook and line, or from a boat in public waters. All licenses expire on Aug 31 of each year.
JOIN B.A.S.S. ($15.00 A YEAR)
It is highly recommended that a club member join as a member of B.A.S.S. www.bassmaster.com . When you join, please make a record your BASS membership number. It will help you to know that for other tournaments.
Briarwood Bass TEAM
The BCS BASS TEAM is a 6 boat competitive team (and alternates) selected by Coach Curtis Gossett in January of each year. The selection is based on ability and performance and includes tournament experience and participation in fall qualifiers. The selection each year is Coach Gossett's decision.
The TEAM is usually made up by HIGH SCHOOL students only, but there are rare times where a Jr High student is needed to complete a 2-man boat.
The Varsity Travel Team competes in the Alabama Student Angler Bass Fishing Association (ASABFA) High School tournament trail. The varsity travel season runs Feb. – May and culminates in the ASABFA Classic.
Do I have to have a boat to be considered for the BCS Varsity travel team?
Yes, you need to have a partner and access to a bass boat that meets ASABFA tournament boat standards and legally equipped according to Alabama state regulations.
FISHING OPPORTUNITIES OUTSIDE OF THE VARSITY TRAVEL TEAM:
There are local and regional tournaments almost every weekend in Alabama. Anyone who wants to fish tournaments may do so as an individual or with a partner at any time. A BCS student is responsible to register themselves and pay fees for any tournament that is NOT ASABFA.
Airport Marine: www.airportmarinetrails.com
Airport Marine has a school trail that is open for anglers 5th grade – 12th grade.
B.A.S.S. JUNIOR Trail https://www.bassmaster.com/
B.A.S.S. High School www.bassmaster.com/high-
B.A.S.S. High School is also referred to as Alabama Bass Nation- must be a BASS ($15) and an ABN member ($10) to enter a tournament.
There are also local events through Bass clubs all the time. Most of these can be found on facebook.
